What are Hershey’s Kisses?
Hershey’s Kisses are a type of chocolate produced by The Hershey Company over one century ago.

The chocolate almost resembles a droplet of water with a narrow strip of paper sticking from the top of the chocolate, which is officially known as a ‘plume.’
Initially, this plume of paper was a flag for the Hershey brand and was added to help distinguish the chocolate from other similar products by rival companies.
Kisses were initially made exclusively from the finest milk chocolate, though as time passed by, more and more flavors and varieties of Hershey Kisses were introduced.
There are year-round flavors available, including birthday cake, cookies and cream, hazelnut, special dark, and white chocolate.
There are also seasonal varieties available, including candy cane, lava cake, mint truffle, milk chocolate with strawberry crème, cherry cordial, “vampire” milk chocolate, and more besides.
There has also been a selection of other varieties, which have now been discontinued, including Candy Corn Kisses, and Kissables, which were similar to M&M’s, and lasted less than 5 years.

A brief history of Hershey’s Kisses
We’ll look at how many Hershey’s Kisses in a bag a little later on.
Before we get there, though, we first need to look at the history of these delicious, flat-bottomed, teardrop shaped chocolate treats.
To do so, we’re taking a trip back in time to 1907.
The Hershey Company first introduced Kisses back in 1907.
The Hershey Company, also known as Hershey’s, is a giant in the world of confectionery, especially in the USA.
With their primary HQ located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, where they have been since 1894, there is also Hershey World amusement park, and Hershey Park.
Initially founded by Milton Hershey, the company is responsible for all manner of chocolaty treats.
Heck, Milton actually purchased Derry Church, Pennsylvania, in 1903 for workers at his company.
He even held a contest to find a suitable name for the town, and Hershey was chosen in his honor.
That’s all well and good, but what about Hershey’s Kisses?
Well, the company initially created these tasty treats, though the exact origins of the name is a bit of a mystery.
Some claim that they got their name from the sound the machine made as it ejected a dollop of chocolate onto the conveyer belt in the factory, as it apparently sounded like a puckered lip smacking kissing sound.
Other more pessimistic outlooks, however, believe that the chocolates get their name from the fact that generic candy companies used “kiss” and “kisses” in their products, as chocolate was often associated with romance.
Ultimately, Milton S. Hershey received the trademark for “Kisses,” and the company ran with it.
Until 1921, they were wrapped by hand. Afterwards a machine took over and made life for the workers much easier. Milton would add the “plume” in 1924 and would trademark it, with the plume featuring the Hershey flag.
During WW2, as aluminum was rationed, Hershey was unable to wrap their Kisses, so they were put on hold. Instead, the company made chocolate military ration bars for the allied soldiers in the war.
After the war, things returned to normal, and in 1974, the company would actually trademark the Kiss foil wrapper, which was now synonymous with the product itself.
While silver was the norm, as the years went by, more colors were offered, including blue, green, and pastel pink.
Hershey would eventually release different flavors and different colored wrappers for various holidays.
Today, the company still uses Milton S. Hershey’s original milk chocolate recipe for Hershey’s Kisses, as well as a cavalcade of other delicious flavors, and colorful foil wrappers. Yummy!
